If you’ve been looking for construction work, you’ve probably seen job adverts asking for a CSCS card. For someone hoping to start as a labourer, getting a CSCS Green Card can be a straightforward way to meet that requirement. The training is short.
You don’t need to spend months studying a trade before applying for a Labourer card. The usual process is to complete a recognised health and safety qualification, pass an accepted safety test and submit your application. That short training commitment is what makes this a quick option for people looking for general labouring work.
At High Aims Training, we offer a Level 1 course for learners who need the qualification, as well as a full GQA CSCS Green Card option. Which one you choose depends on what you’ve already completed and how much of the process you want to arrange through us.
The Green Card is specifically for labouring duties. If you’re already qualified in a trade or enrolled on a relevant training programme, check which card matches your occupation before booking.
What makes the Green Card process quick
Our Level 1 course takes one day. This means you can finish the training without setting aside several weeks or taking a long break from other commitments.
After the course, the main things that affect your progress are getting your certificate, finding a suitable test appointment and submitting the correct documents. Checking availability early can help you avoid waiting between stages.
It’s worth planning your revision too. Booking the earliest appointment won’t save time if you arrive unprepared and need to take the test again. Give yourself enough time to understand the questions and the safety rules behind them.
Complete our Level 1 health and safety course
Our CSCS Green Card Course leads to the Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment. This booking covers the Level 1 qualification only. You’ll still need to complete the remaining test and application steps to receive your card.
During the course, you’ll learn about recognising hazards, understanding risk assessments and handling materials safely. It also covers working at height awareness, risks to health and staying safe around plant and equipment.
These are things you’ll come across on a working site. You might need to move materials, work near a vehicle or report something that looks unsafe. Knowing what to watch for helps you make better decisions when you’re new to the job.
You’ll take a multiple choice assessment at the end. We provide assessment results on the same day, so you’ll know whether you’ve passed. Once your certificate is ready, you can use it as evidence for the relevant card application.
Take the CITB touchscreen test
For the standard CSCS Labourer card application, you also need the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test for operatives. You’ll often hear it called the touchscreen test.
This is separate from the assessment on your Level 1 course. Completing the course doesn’t count as passing the CITB test.
The operatives test gives you 45 minutes to answer 50 questions. You need at least 45 correct answers to pass. Use official CITB revision materials and practise with timed questions before your appointment.
Read your booking confirmation carefully, especially the identification requirements. Check the name on your booking against your ID and allow enough time to reach the test centre.
Apply for your CSCS Green Card
Once you have the required qualification and pass the test, you can submit your application. If you’re applying directly to CSCS, use CSCS Online or the My CSCS app.
Keep your qualification certificate and CITB testing details to hand. Check your personal information before you submit anything. Missing documents, spelling mistakes or different names on your records can hold up the application.
Passing the assessments makes you eligible to apply, but your card still needs to be approved. You’ll receive it after the issuer has checked your application.
Allow around 7 to 10 working days for your card
Around 7 to 10 working days can be a useful planning estimate after you’ve passed the assessments and submitted a complete application. It isn’t a guaranteed total from the date you book your course.
GQA aims to issue cards within seven working days of receiving the required information and payment. CSCS advises that a physical card should arrive within ten working days of the application being processed.
The overall wait depends on certificate availability, test appointments, application checks and delivery. If your card is issued directly by CSCS, you can access a digital version through My CSCS once your application is approved.
Choose our full GQA CSCS Green Card option
If you’re looking for the complete card option, visit our GQA CSCS Green Card Course page. Our separate Level 1 course is for learners who only need the qualification.
GQA issues the Green CSCS Q Card for labourers. Applicants need the relevant GQA qualification and an accepted health and safety test. This can be the GQA safety test or the appropriate CITB test.
Contact High Aims Training to check the current package details and available dates. Tell us if you’ve already completed any training or testing so we can help you understand what you need next.
Start looking for labouring work
While you’re waiting for your card, get your CV ready and look for suitable vacancies. When speaking to agencies or employers, explain which assessments you’ve passed and whether your application has been approved.
Your card supports your job applications, but employment also depends on the employer’s needs and your suitability for the work. Once you start, follow the site induction and ask your supervisor if you’re unsure about a task.
Frequently asked questions
What is a CSCS Green Card
It is the Labourer card for people doing general construction labouring work. You need an accepted health and safety qualification and test pass before applying.
Does your Level 1 course include the card
No. That course covers the Level 1 qualification. You’ll still need the appropriate safety test and a successful card application. Our GQA option is available for those seeking the full card process.
Do I need a touchscreen test after Level 1
For the standard CSCS application, you normally need the CITB operatives test. The GQA scheme also accepts its own safety test. Check which test applies to your booking.
How long does the Level 1 course take
Our course takes one day, with assessment results available that day. Receiving your certificate and completing the test and card application are separate steps.
How long is the Green Card valid
A first CSCS Labourer card is valid for two years. If you continue working as a labourer, you may renew for five years when you meet the renewal requirements.
Can I start work as soon as I receive my card
You can seek suitable labouring work, but you’ll need a job offer and must meet the employer’s checks and site requirements. The card doesn’t guarantee employment.
